Preparing Your Header Front for Wind and Lodged Crops: An El Niño Readiness Guide for the 2026–27 Harvest
Harvest may still feel some distance away, but August is when good preparation begins.
Earth Sciences New Zealand confirmed in July 2026 that El Niño conditions had developed in the tropical Pacific. As the season progresses, New Zealand may experience more westerly airflow, unusually windy periods and greater temperature variability. El Niño is expected to strengthen further, with potentially significant effects later in 2026 and during the 2026–27 summer.
No seasonal outlook can predict conditions in an individual paddock. However, the possibility of a windier and more variable growing season gives farmers and harvesting contractors a good reason to prepare for uneven, tangled or lodged crops.
A header front that performs well in standing crop may require more attention when the crop is leaning, lying close to the ground or feeding unevenly. Inspecting the cutterbar, reel, crop lifters and feeding components now can reduce the risk of rushed repairs when the harvesting window opens.
Here are the main areas to check before the 2026–27 harvest.

When replacing components, confirm compatibility against the header model, serial-number range and existing cutting system. Similar-looking guards and sections are not automatically interchangeable.

1. Begin with the Cutterbar
The cutterbar needs to produce a clean cut before the reel and draper system can move the crop effectively.
Lodged or tangled crop can place additional pressure on the cutting system because material may approach the knife at inconsistent angles. Blunt sections or damaged guards can increase pushing, bunching and uneven cutting.
Inspect the entire cutterbar for:
- Blunt, chipped or broken knife sections.
- Bent, cracked or badly worn knife guards.
- Excessive clearance between the knife and guards.
- Loose section bolts or rivets.
- Worn wear plates and guides.
- Damaged or poorly adjusted hold-down clips.
- Free movement and correct alignment of the knife assembly.

2. Inspect the Reel Before Adjusting It
The reel helps present the crop to the cutterbar and move cut material towards the feeding system. In lodged or uneven crops, its condition and adjustment become especially important.
Before changing reel height, fore-and-aft position or speed, inspect the mechanical components:
- Missing, cracked or permanently bent reel tines.
- Loose tine mounting hardware.
- Damaged bats or supports.
- Worn bushes and bearings.
- Movement in reel arms and pivots.
- Hydraulic leaks or damaged hoses.
- Inconsistent tine spacing.
- Signs that the reel has contacted the cutterbar.
A reel with several damaged tines may feed crop unevenly even when its settings appear correct.
Avoid automatically using the most aggressive reel setting. Excessive reel speed or poor positioning can increase shattering, wrap material around the reel or push crop ahead of the knife. Begin with the machine manufacturer’s recommendations and make small adjustments for crop conditions.

3. Decide Whether Crop Lifters Are Needed
Crop lifters are designed to help raise low or lodged crop so the cutterbar can collect it more effectively. They can be valuable in difficult conditions, but they should be treated as a crop-specific tool rather than a permanent solution for every paddock.
Before harvest:
- Inspect existing lifters for bending, cracking and worn contact areas.
- Check that mounting points and hardware are secure.
- Confirm that the lifters are suitable for the cutting system.
- Review the manufacturer’s installation and spacing guidance.
- Carry spare lifters and mounting hardware where practical.
The correct arrangement depends on the crop, lodging direction, ground conditions and header design. Incorrect spacing or damaged lifters can create inconsistent feeding or increase the risk of ground contact.
When working in badly lodged crop, operators may also need to reconsider travel direction and approach the crop from the most effective angle. Make changes cautiously and follow the header manufacturer’s operating instructions.

4. Check Auger and Retractable Fingers
On fronts using an auger or retractable finger system, damaged fingers can interrupt crop movement after the cutterbar has done its job.
Look for:
- Missing or bent fingers.
- Cracked poly fingers.
- Worn finger holders.
- Loose mounting hardware.
- Irregular finger movement.
- Contact marks inside the auger.
- Damage caused by foreign material.
A single missing finger may appear minor in the workshop, but several damaged fingers across the feeding area can create bunching and uneven delivery.

5. Protect the Front When Cutting Low
Lodged crop often requires the operator to work closer to the ground. That increases the importance of skid shoes, wear surfaces and front protection.
Inspect:
- Poly skid shoes for thin or worn sections.
- Loose or missing skid hardware.
- Uneven wear that may indicate poor adjustment.
- Bent mounting brackets.
- Damage from stones or previous ground contact.
- Rock-protection components where fitted.
Replacing an inexpensive wear component before harvest may protect a much more costly part of the header later.
Ground conditions can vary substantially across a paddock. A setup that works in one area may require adjustment when moving into softer soil, wheel tracks or uneven ground.

6. Build a Model-Specific Harvest Spares Kit
A useful spares kit is not simply a box of assorted parts. It should be based on the exact fronts being operated.
For each header, record:
- Manufacturer and model.
- Front width.
- Serial number.
- Cutterbar system.
- Knife section and guard references.
- Reel tine type.
- Auger finger type.
- Hold-down configuration.
- Crop lifter type.
- Frequently used bolts and fasteners.
A practical kit may include:
- Knife sections.
- Common knife guards.
- Hold-down clips.
- Reel tines and mounting hardware.
- Retractable fingers and holders.
- Crop lifter hardware.
- Cutterbar bolts and nuts.
- Selected bearings or bushes.
- Skid-shoe hardware.
The purpose is not to carry every possible component. It is to cover the smaller, predictable failures that can otherwise stop harvesting while a replacement is located.
7. Complete a Controlled Pre-Season Test
After completing repairs, do not wait until the first harvest paddock to test the front.
Before operating, check that all guards are fitted, personnel are clear and manufacturer safety procedures have been followed.
Then:
- Move the knife by hand only where the manufacturer permits.
- Check for tight or binding points.
- Confirm that hardware is secure.
- Run the front initially at low speed.
- Listen for knocking, scraping or irregular vibration.
- Observe reel and finger movement.
- Check hydraulic connections for leaks.
- Stop and recheck recently replaced components.
- Verify adjustments and fastener torque using the correct manual.
A controlled test provides time to correct small problems without crop pressure, transport delays or customers waiting.
Preparation Protects More Than the Machine
New Zealand’s arable sector continues to face pressure from restrained commodity returns and rising operating costs. MPI expects arable export revenue to recover gradually from 2026–27, but global oversupply and subdued pricing remain important commercial challenges.
In that environment, reliability matters. Avoiding one preventable breakdown, reducing crop left behind or completing a paddock within a suitable weather window can be worth considerably more than the cost of replacing worn parts beforehand.
The goal is not to predict exactly what El Niño will deliver. It is to make sure the header front is prepared for a wider range of crop and weather conditions.
