Knife Guards vs Sickle Sections: How to Diagnose Poor Cutting Before the 2026–27 Harvest
A header can look ready for harvest and still have a cutterbar that is quietly costing you performance.
When crop starts pushing ahead of the knife, stems are left ragged, feeding becomes uneven or the cutterbar begins vibrating more than expected, it is easy to blame the entire knife assembly. In reality, poor cutting performance can come from several different wear points working together.
Two of the first components to inspect are knife guards and sickle sections.
Both are relatively small parts, but the relationship between them is fundamental to a clean cutting action. Understanding what each component does — and what its wear looks like — can help farmers, contractors and workshops identify problems before the harvesting window opens.
With the 2026–27 season approaching, that is worth doing now rather than when crop is ready and every hour matters.
What Does a Sickle Section Do?
Sickle sections, sometimes referred to simply as knife sections, form the cutting edge of the moving knife assembly.
As the knife travels back and forth through the guards, the sections shear crop material against the cutting surfaces of the guard. For that action to work efficiently, the sections need suitable cutting edges, correct alignment and secure mounting.
A worn knife section may still move freely and appear serviceable at first glance, but its cutting ability can decline well before it physically breaks.
Look closely for:
- Rounded or noticeably blunt cutting edges
- Chipped or missing teeth
- Broken points
- Bent sections
- Loose bolts or rivets
- Uneven wear across different areas of the knife
One useful clue is the quality of the cut itself. Ragged stems or crop that appears torn rather than cleanly cut can indicate that sections are no longer cutting effectively.
Do not automatically replace only the worst-looking section without inspecting the rest of the cutterbar. Uneven wear may point to another issue such as alignment, guard condition or incorrect knife clearance.
What Does a Knife Guard Do?
Knife guards support and guide the knife while providing the opposing surface needed for the shearing action.
That means a new knife section cannot perform properly if it is running through damaged, bent or badly worn guards.
Inspect knife guards for:
- Bent points or prongs
- Cracks
- Broken tips
- Excessive wear around the knife path
- Stone or impact damage
- Uneven guard height
- Poor alignment with surrounding guards
A guard that has been bent by an impact can alter the relationship between the guard and knife even when the damage looks relatively minor.
This is why replacing knife sections alone does not always solve poor cutting.

So Which One Is Causing the Poor Cut?
The most reliable approach is to inspect the cutting system as a system, rather than assuming one component is responsible.
If crop is leaving a consistently ragged cut across the full width, begin by inspecting section sharpness and general cutterbar condition.
If the problem is concentrated in one part of the front, look closely at the guards and sections in that specific area. Compare them with components beside them.
If you see crop pushing rather than entering the cutterbar cleanly, inspect section condition, guard alignment and knife-to-guard clearance.
If the knife appears to lift excessively or move away from the cutting surface, the problem may involve hold-down clips rather than the sections themselves.
And if there is unusual vibration, knocking or binding, stop and investigate before continuing to operate. Bent guards, damaged sections, incorrect alignment or wear elsewhere in the knife drive can all contribute.
Always follow the machine manufacturer's inspection, adjustment and safety procedures before operating or working around a cutterbar.
Do Not Forget the Hold-Down Clips
Hold-down clips are easy to overlook because they are not normally the first component people think about when discussing cutting performance.
Their job is important: they help maintain the correct relationship between the moving knife and the guards.
Too much knife movement can reduce the quality of the cutting action and may contribute to vibration or accelerated wear.
Check hold-downs for visible wear, bending, loose mounting hardware and excessive knife clearance. If adjustment is required, use the specifications for the exact cutting system rather than relying on a general rule.
A cutterbar with good sections and good guards can still perform poorly when the knife is not being held correctly.
New Parts Still Need Correct Fitment
One of the most common traps with harvesting parts is assuming that two components that look similar are interchangeable.
They may not be.
Header model, serial-number range, cutterbar configuration, knife drive and previous modifications can all influence the correct part.
This is particularly important on platforms such as MacDon D Series and FD Series headers, where operators may encounter different cutterbar configurations across machines and generations.
MacDon itself lists preventive maintenance and high-wear replacement parts as part of its parts support for FlexDraper and draper-header platforms, reinforcing the importance of checking wear components before peak operation.
Before ordering, record:
Header brand → model → serial number → front width → current part number → clear photograph of the existing component.
That information makes identification considerably easier and reduces the risk of ordering by appearance alone.
Why This Matters More Than Ever This Season
Harvest reliability is not simply a workshop issue.
Earth Sciences New Zealand expects the current El Niño to have a strong influence into 2027. Historically, El Niño spring patterns can increase westerly-quarter winds and produce drier conditions in some eastern and northern regions, although actual conditions will vary by location and season.
Weather uncertainty makes suitable harvesting windows valuable.
At the same time, MPI reports continued commercial pressure in the arable sector from subdued pricing and global oversupply, despite forecasting an export-revenue recovery from 2026–27.
In that environment, preventable downtime becomes harder to justify.
A worn guard, damaged section or incorrectly supported knife may be inexpensive compared with the cost of stopping during a suitable harvesting window.
Build a Small Cutterbar Spares Kit Before Harvest
You do not need to carry an entire parts department in the service vehicle.
A useful cutterbar kit should focus on the wear items most likely to interrupt harvesting on the exact machine being operated.
Depending on the header and cutting system, that may include spare knife sections, common guards, section hardware, hold-down components and frequently used fasteners.
Contractors running several fronts should consider keeping the kits machine-specific and clearly labelled.
The goal is simple: when a predictable wear component fails, you already know what fits.
Start With the Cut
Good harvesting performance begins at the front of the machine.
Before the first serious harvest day, inspect the entire cutterbar slowly. Compare wear from one end to the other. Check sections, guards, hold-downs and knife movement rather than focusing only on whichever component looks easiest to replace.
